This supercharged sequel to the blockbuster action film of 2002 replaces Vin Diesel with Ice Cube, but most viewers will be hard pressed to tell the difference. Its got the same driving pace, just as much action, even more elaborate weaponry, and, perhaps most welcome, some snarky humor as well. Ice Cube plays Darius Stone, a former special-ops soldier imprisoned for transgressions against his superiors. NSA agent Augustus Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson), once again in need of a covert operative outside "the system," recruits Darius to foil a planned takeover of the government by rogue military forces. What neither of them knows is that the mastermind behind this plot is General George Deckert (Willem Dafoe), a highly decorated officer who believes President James Sanford (Peter Strauss) too weak to deal with challenges from international enemies. Director Lee Tamahori steers this testosterone-fueled juggernaut with admirable skill, establishing plot points with a bare minimum of detail to allow more time for a succession of pulse-pounding action sequences. The story gets underway with a bang as Gibbonss operation is decimated in a surprise attack. From that point the pace seldom flags, and although theres no significant female presence, the story really doesnt need one. Erstwhile rapper Ice Cube, nicely buffed for this physically demanding role, makes a surprisingly effective and believable action star -- which, ultimately, is the key to States success. Ed Hulse
