Barnes & Noble After pioneering "super-marionation" with the sci-fi series Fireball XL-5 and taking it to another level in Thunderbirds, Gerry Anderson dove into live-action TV Sci-Fi with UFO. Originally telecast in 1970 and set in 1980, the series introduces SHADO (Supreme Headquarters Alien Defense Organization) and its monumental task -- defending the planet from alien invasion. Led by Commander Ed Straker (Ed Bishop), SHADO launches counterattacks from a secret moon base as aliens invade Earth and attempt to harvest human organs. This four-DVD set includes the shows final 13 episodes, with commentaries from Anderson, co-creator Sylvia Anderson, outtakes, and a Gerry Anderson Biography. For UFO fans, this release is a nostalgic blast. But newbies will be especially impressed -- or at least charmed -- by this stylish forerunner to Andersons even more ambitious Space 1999.
