An audacious experiment in real-time storytelling conducted by innovative director Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas), Timecode utilizes a talented ensemble cast in its full-scale assault on the conventions of cinematic narrative. The 97-minute story, shot with digital video cameras, consists of four sequences -- concurrently filmed without any breaks -- displayed on screen as equal quadrants. Nearly two-dozen principal players interact during the hour and a half, which unfolds in and around Hollywood. Aspiring bisexual actress Salma Hayek is having an affair with studio executive Stellan Skarsgaard; her jealous lesbian lover, businesswoman Jeanne Tripplehorn, suspects that somethings up and determines to take action. Saffron Burrows appears as Skarsgaards devastated wife, and Holly Hunter, Kyle MacLachlan, Steven Weber, Glenne Headly, Julian Sands, and Leslie Mann show up variously as actors, directors, and executives. Impeccably directed around improvised dialogue, Timecode is basically a soap opera, but one thats dazzling in its technical virtuosity. Ed Hulse
