Barnes & Noble For The X-Files fans, the mythology arc (or MythArc) episodes have become the quintessential way to explain the popularity of a series that lasted for nine seasons. Agent Fox Mulders (David Duchovny) quest to find his sister Samantha -- who he believes was abducted by aliens -- is the driving force behind his obsession with the X-Files, cases the FBI considers unsolvable because of supernatural or paranormal elements. When Agent Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) is sent to "debunk" Mulders work, the partners are thrown into a mysterious world of bizarre creatures and even stranger government conspiracies. With the The X-Files Mythology Volume 1: Abduction DVD set, fans are offered 16 episodes from the first three seasons that make up the backbone of the long-running conspiracy about aliens, clones, the Black Oil, and the hybridization of the human species -- all of which continued to dominate the series even into its ninth season. The highlight of the set is an all-new documentary, "The Threads of Mythology," in which creator Chris Carter and others explain the process of the MythArc and how it was invented. Carter notes that the mythology episodes are the ones where the personal lives of the Mulder and Scully are explored more deeply, whereas the individual cases, known as "Monsters of the Week," focused on creepy crawlies up to no good. Some of the greatest The X-Files episodes are contained in this set, especially: the harrowing two-part "Duane Barry," and "Ascension," which document Scullys abduction; "One Breath," featuring Duchovny in a stellar performance as Scully is mysteriously returned; the fantastic "Colony," and "End Game" wherein Mulder believes he may have found his sister; and the great Season 2 cliffhanger "Anasazi," which brings back the nefarious Alex Krycek (Nicholas Lea) and ends with Mulders life hanging in the balance.
