Employing a conceit similar to the one that propelled The Fugitive to huge success years earlier (Dr. Kimbles search for the One-Armed Man), David Lynch served viewers a similarly obsessive conundrum in 1990: "Who killed Laura Palmer?" Translating from the big screen to the small the directors penchant for plumbing the bizarre amid the mundane (Blue Velvet), Lynchs fictional Twin Peaks is a place that could give South Park a run for its weird. Dubbed "quirky" by critics at a loss for labels to describe it, the series mixed elements of film noir and police procedurals with a soap opera-like web of story lines. The main story begins with Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), a pretty and seemingly squeaky-clean teen whose body turns up, wrapped in plastic, on a river bank. The case brings FBI agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) to this small lumber town in the Pacific Northwest, where he joins forces with the local sheriff, Harry S. Truman (Michael Ontkean). Over the first seven episodes here, they slowly uncover the towns sinister secrets -- and turn up some oddities worthy of The X-Files (oh, what a crossover that would have been!). Although this three-DVD set lacks the pilot episode (it remains available as an import), the seven episodes of this first season remain its most spellbinding. Episodes include: "Traces to Nowhere, "Zen, or The Skill to Catch a Killer," "Rest in Pain," "The One-Armed Man," "Coopers Dream," "Realization Time," and "Last Evening." Not only a career springboard for some of its cast -- particularly Lara Flynn Boyle, who portrays Lauras best friend, Donna -- Twin Peaks also features some recognizable cult favorites, such as Piper Laurie, Russ Tamblyn, Peggy Lipton, Miguel Ferrer, Ray Wise, Sherilyn Fenn, and Eraserheads Jack Nance. The show lasted an all-too-brief 29 episodes, which Lynch followed almost immediately with a feature-film prequel, Fire Walk with Me. Patricia Kim OConeEntertainment WeeklyLynch has called Twin Peaks "Peyton Place meets Blue Velvet." Its that and more: Its Mayberry R.F.D. Goes Psycho; Pee-wees Playhouse Has a Nervous Breakdown; and the first you-really-cant-miss- this show of the 90s. We followed the show like many people follow their favorite daytime soaps. When they came out with the series on DVD, I was estatic. The only problem is where are all of the other episodes? The DVD collection: Twin Peaks Season One only has 7 episodes. Season one actually has 13 episodes, and there were a total of 29 in all. Id really like to add the rest to my collection, and I know there are others out there who feel the same. Weve been left in limbo!!Katharina, A reviewer, September 28, 2005 What a shame!I was fascinated by Twin Peeks in the 90s and Id like to get it ALL. And thats what I mean ALL! With pilot and all the series. I remember that it lasted over months, every week one, why are here only 7? Where is the rest? I dont need a summary in a sequel, I want it just like it was shown in TV. I couldnt see it regularly, for me its still a mystery, so Id like to see it just like it was shown. So DO something, Im sure there are a lot of other people who think the same.EEEEE (mydogismukluks@yahoo.com), A reviewer, April 4, 2005 Not THE answers, but some kind of answerI am still waiting for the entire series on DVD. Fire Walk With Me provides some answers but doesnt really answer the big questions, it merely summarizes what happened in the series and what led up to the Laura Palmer business. what happened to Chris Isaak? David Bowie? Does Cooper ever get out of the Black Lodge? Does the dancing dwarf and killer bob and mike find a new place to gather garmonbozia? This series is ripe for a sequel on a decent channel. bravo?
