Those who like teenybopper musicals based on Gilbert & Sullivan operettas will find The Pirate Movie a minor classic of the subgenre. Directed by Ken Annakin (Swiss Family Robinson), this 1982 golden turkey is a hoot and a holler, with Razzie Awards to its discredit for Worst Director and Worst Original Song ("Pumpin and Blowin "). Kristy McNichol (Family) stars as Mabel, a mousy young woman who dreams herself into a grand, romantic pirate adventure à la The Pirates of Penzance. Mabel shows a bit of cheek (as well as leg) as the rebellious daughter of the Major General. She falls in love with the hapless Frederic (Christopher Atkins of The Blue Lagoon), apprentice to the wicked Pirate King. En route to their "Happy Ending," the company performs rousing versions of several Penzance staples, and the star-crossed couple sings some original ballads that helped earn The Pirate Movie yet another Razzie for Worst Musical Score. Like Xanadu, The Pirate Movie is no doubt fondly remembered by those whose adolescence it unaccountably brightened. Its high spirits are certainly infectious. Some naughty double entendres concerning the words "hung," "deflower," and "nuts" push the PG rating, but they are bound to sail over young viewers heads. Deliriously ill-conceived movies like this come around once in a lifetime, which only adds to their campy charm. Planks for the memories! Donald Liebenson
