Barnes & Noble Riding in off its second consecutive year as the Emmy voters top comedy program, Taxi necessarily shifts gears a bit in its third season, adding backstories and quirks to the now-familiar characters. Latka Gravas (Andy Kaufman), for instance, undergoes a bizarre personality split in "Latka the Playboy" and turns into Vic Ferrari. "Well, excuse me," Vic chides his Sunshine Cab Company colleagues, "but I thought I had the right to evolve." Despicable dispatcher Louis de Palma (Danny DeVito) is still rotten enough to possibly sabotage Bobbys acting career ("Bobby and the Critic"), but he touchingly reveals himself to be a lovelorn and lonely man in "Louies Rival" and "Louies Mother." Less convincingly, 60s burnout Jim Ignatowski (Christopher Lloyd) is provided a family backstory ("Going Home"). As with Cheers in its subsequent seasons, Taxi idled when it strayed too far from the workplace, as witness "Call of the Wild," in which the New York cabbies struggle to survive a weekend in a snowbound mountain cabin. While this seamless ensembles chemistry (especially One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest veterans DeVito and Lloyd) is a joy to behold, each cast member gets a chance to shine. Both DeVito and Judd Hirsch, as salt-of-the-earth cabbie Alex Reiger, broke through to win Emmys for their work this season. Among many standout episodes: "Elaines Old Friend," in which Elaine (Marilu Henner) gets Alex to pose as her sophisticated paramour in hopes of impressing a chum from high school; "Zen and the Art of Cabdriving," which finds Jim committing himself to becoming the perfect hackie; "Latkas Cookies," featuring a secret, addictive ingredient that proves a legal deterrent to Latkas becoming a cookie millionaire. Certainly the 1980-81 season’s best-remembered episode is the Emmy-winning "Elaines Strange Triangle" -- featuring Alex’s moment of unexpected glory on the disco dance floor. Taxi gets extra mileage this season from some Emmy-worthy guest stars, including future Cheers star Rhea Perlman as Louies sweet girlfriend, Zena; Louise Lasser as Alexs hostile ex-wife ("Fathers of the Bride"); Julie "Marge Simpson" Kavner in "Tonys Sister and Jim" (also one of Lloyds best episodes); and Eileen Brennan as the treacherous seductress Mrs. Mackenzie in "Thy Bosss Wife." Ranked by TV Guide among the top 50 greatest series of all time, Taxi rolls on as one of televisions class acts.
