Adapted from several novels by Lucy Maud Montgomery, this multi-award-winning Canadian series (originally broadcast as Road to Avonlea), is a spin-off of the acclaimed miniseries Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea. Sarah Polley stars here as Sara Stanley, a wealthy and pampered Montreal girl who is dispatched to remote Prince Edward Island after her widowed father is embroiled in a devastating financial scandal. The first episode, "The Journey Begins," is more dramatic than later episodes, as Sara is uprooted from her privileged way of life and reunited with her long-lost, far-flung relatives. These include the very severe Aunt Hetty (Jackie Burroughs, who was honored with Canadas prestigious Gemini Award), who blames Saras father for his wifes death; and Saras young cousin Felicity, who resents the newcomer: The pairs rivalry hilariously escalates in "Proof of the Pudding" before blossoming into friendship. Although initially unable and unwilling to fend for herself, the spirited Sara is "a clever little thing" and, like Pollyanna, becomes an integral member of the close-knit community. Avonleas pleasures are timeless, despite its early-20th-century setting, with plenty of childhood mischief, memorable and eccentric characters, and captivating coming-of-age stories. It found a U.S. home on the Disney Channel and is a welcome addition to the DVD library. Donald LiebensonCustomer ReviewsWrite your own online review >
