A thoughtful, balanced examination of commercial real-estate developments impact on our environment, this leisurely drama written and directed by John Sayles (Lone Star) ranks among the very best of his socially conscious films. It takes place on Floridas east coast, upon which greedy developer Alan King has set his sights. Motel and restaurant owner Edie Falco must decide whether or not to sell her ramshackle establishment to make room for luxury resorts, and failed actress Angela Bassett comes to grips with the idea of losing the old family homestead. Timothy Hutton portrays Kings architect, a principled man who enjoys a brief affair with Falco, and Mary Steenburgen is excellent as a local Chamber of Commerce functionary. Like most Sayles movies, Sunshine State doesnt adhere to the typical three-act story structure: its not a formulaic exercise in which stock characters respond to predictable situations. The plot unfolds slowly, its threads scattered among a multiplicity of characters with conflicting motives, emotions, and objectives. Sayles eschews easy answers and facile resolutions of conflict for much more realistic ambiguity, which is to his credit. Not necessarily for all tastes but eminently worthwhile nonetheless, Sunshine State is a quietly remarkable movie with vividly drawn characters and pitch-perfect performances. Ed Hulse
