Barnes & Noble Janell Cannons endearing picture book -- a young fruit bat separated from her mother after an owl attack -- takes wing in this animated Scholastic production. Stellaluna lands in a birds nest, where the mother bird agrees to take the little fruit bat under her wing, "provided she behaves like a good bird should." That means eating bugs (yeech), not hanging upside-down, and sleeping at night (when Stellaluna likes to fly). Birds and fruit bats will discover and learn to appreciate what makes them "so different, and yet so alike." And, since this isnt old-school Disney, mother and daughter are even reunited by programs end. The 3-D animation evokes the lush forest setting, and the music is pleasant (this DVD edition offers a sing-along option). New characters -- an aspiring superhero jumping spider and two toucans with a penchant for makeovers -- provide some comic relief. But the heart of Cannons story shines through.
