Barnes & Noble Although overshadowed by the Star Trek series, the TV sci-fi adventure Stargate SG-1 enjoys "phenomenon" status in its own right, with a huge fan base and a unique universe that has considerably expanded on the original 1994 feature film that inspired it. Like the movie, the series uses as its jumping-off point an artificially created "wormhole" through which humans can be transported to worlds light-years away. Richard Dean Anderson (MacGyver) and Michael Shanks have at this point made the roles of Captain Jack O’Neill and Dr. Daniel Jackson their own, with all due apologies to Kurt Russell and James Spader. And Amanda Tapping, as Major Samantha Carter, adds elements the film sorely lacked. Their principal adversaries are the snakelike Goa’ulds, warlike aliens who collect life forms from around the galaxy to use as hosts. The 22 episodes of Season 5 bring dramatic changes to Stargate SG-1, culminating with the sudden departure of Dan Jackson and his replacement by alien-relations specialist Jonas Quinn (Corin Nemec). This season contains the highly regarded 100th episode, "Wormhole X-treme," a lighthearted romp in which O’Neill becomes the technical adviser to a wacky reality TV show. This fan favorite showcases Anderson’s comic abilities and spoofs the premise of the series. Other installments are considerably more serious, perfectly maintaining the delicate balance between plot, action, special effects, and characterization. Fans familiar with the joys of Stargate SG-1 will welcome this fascinating, transitional season; but newcomers to the series should start with Season 1.
