Barnes & Noble A vehicle for one of the catchiest of all cartoon theme songs, the 1967 animated series that swung Stan Lees Everyman superhero into Saturday morning history arrives in a six-disc instant archive. While episodes from Spideys first brush with TV are available on DVDs of later series incarnations as bonuses, The 67 Collection contains all 52 episodes from the series three-season run. It’s a blast from the past for children of the 60s and, for a new generation, a tween-friendly alternative to the PG-13 feature films and the more sophisticated 1995 series. From the classic theme song ("Is he strong? / Listen, bud / Hes got radioactive blood....") to the final episode, it is hard not to get caught in Spider-Mans web. The animation in the first season is limited, but the villains (including Dr. Octopus, who just happens to be Spideys nemesis in the live-action sequel) are vintage Marvel, and our hero gets off some good wisecracks. Things pick up in Season 2 with "The Origin of Spider-Man," a classic episode whose more expressionistic design and bold colors mark a stylistic departure for the series. Animator Ralph Bakshi joined the series at this point, and his influence is keenly felt, although things do get a little wild, as in the out-of-this-world episode "Revolt in the Fifth Dimension." Save for a pamphlet with a written introduction by Lee, there are no extras in this set. But for true Spidey fans, this set’s like a streak of light that arrives just in time. The animation is unusual and eye-catching and the pulsating, overly-dramatic music is as groovy as the corny teen-lingo. While the story plots for many episodes are far-fatched even for a comic book hero you can just sit back and take in the action and hip-to-the-scene sounds. For nostalgic video, it doesnt get any better. Theres more to love here than the number of times Peters voice changes as Spiderman! Interested in the song lyrics? - Check out themostlyrics.com!
