Barnes & Noble Suppose Earth sent all its atomic waste to the Moon and, one day, that waste exploded, sending the third rock from the suns sole natural satellite careening off into uncharted space? In 1975, this ambitious notion fueled Space: 1999, a series produced by British sci-fi TV legends Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, the husband-and-wife puppeteer auteur team that gave the world "supermarionation" and such cherished kids TV staples as Thunderbirds. Rather than imagining the devastation that would result on Earth, though, the Andersons made the space station Moonbase Alpha the centerpiece of their program, tracing the trials of the waste-station team sent unwittingly off on Mr. Moons Wild Ride. The Anglo-American cast is led by the erstwhile Mission: Impossible partners and off-screen husband-and-wife Martin Landau and Barbara Bain, with many British TV greats filling guest roles from time to time. Most memorable is Barry Morse, who makes an especially delicious character of Professor Victor Bergman through the shows first season. Remastered from the original 35 mm prints, this A&E DVD release includes all 48 original episodes, plus a host of behind-the-scenes featurettes and supplemental features.
