According to legend, ABC received 32,000 letters about Soap before the first episode had even premiered -- only 9 of them were positive. The series, which mercilessly ridiculed TV soap-opera melodrama, put people out sight-unseen because of its promised treatment of such taboo topics as impotence, homosexuality, infidelity, and mental illness. Centering on sisters Jessica Tate (a great Katherine Helmond) and Mary Campbell (Cathryn Damon), Soap parodied dysfunctional families before it became hackneyed to do so. The series, created by Susan Harris (Golden Girls), benefits from some wonderful supporting performances, including those by Richard Mulligan (as Marys impotent second husband), Billy Crystal (Marys suddenly out-of-the closet son), and Robert Guillaume, whose status as the only sane character here led to the long-running spin-off Benson. Taking to the air in 1977, Soap proved a huge hit and was one of the rare U.S. sitcoms to build a following in England. Although 25-plus years of almost-anything-goes TV have dulled Soaps edge a bit, it remains a wild and especially well played comedy. The show was ahead of its time.Quin, A reviewer, March 15, 2004 Still Brilliant!25 years later Soap remains a brilliant comedy with a social edge. Daring anything and gambling everything, Susan Harris approached her audience head on (and without apologizing) in a fashion that has yet to be repeated. This show managed to effectively change the face of television while making audiences think and, in many ways, the issues faced then, with such a witty and light touch, are still relevant today. Bring on Season 2!reviewer, A reviewer, January 17, 2004 Great ShowI agree with the other reviewer... Soap is unlike any sitcom before or since. The quality of acting and the story lines are great. I cant wait for more seasons!!!!Jeri Golden (jerig2@hotmail.com), A sit-com lover., November 30, 2003 SOAP A superior sit-com ahead of its timeSoap was, and still is, the all time funniest sit-com ever to hit the airways. The characters were so interesting and played so brilliantly by the perfect cast. I love the way Susan Harris writes. Even though I watched the re-runs on the Comedy channel, I hated that they chopped it into little pieces and left so much out. I am so grateful that this finally came out on DVD, and I keep checking Barnes & Noble to see when I can pre-order subsequent seasons.
