The furor over this groundbreaking sitcom had died down by the time its third season got underway, but just because Soap seemed less incendiary didnt mean creator Susan Harris and writing partner Stu Silver werent still looking for ways to push the envelope. The 22 episodes of 1979-80 continue the previous years trend toward wacky subplots but dont shy away from the series trademark embrace of infidelity, racism, and sexual dysfunction as topics worthy of lampooning. The season opener finds Burt (Richard Mulligan) aboard a spaceship after being kidnapped by aliens, who replace him with an exact duplicate who turns out to be better in bed. The Tate family butler, Benson (Robert Guillaume), departs in the third episode -- because Guillaume was starring in the spin-off series Benson-- after a moving farewell from Jessica (Katherine Helmond), who takes center stage later in the year when she contracts a terminal illness. The formerly vicious gangster Dutch (Donnelly Rhodes) goes mushy after his sweetheart, Eunice (Jennifer Salt), begins cheating on him, and he turns to her sister, Corinne (Diana Canova), for comfort. Meanwhile, Tate scion Billy (Jimmy Baio) evades brainwashing by a cult and plunges into an affair with one of his teachers. Billy Crystal continues as the formerly gay Jodie, who confronts social-service professionals when his suitability as a parent comes into question. This years plot complications are myriad, as always, and the ensemble cast continues to perform like a well-oiled machine, making this daring sitcom an ongoing delight. Youll be amazed by how well these shows hold up. Its humor is wonderful and although the plots are wacky and twisted, they work for this type of comedy. I need to know when season 4 comes out so i can buy it!Laura, A reviewer, April 1, 2005 They dont make em like this anymoreI am 27 and remember watching SOAP on tape that my Father taped. When I was home sick I would watch them ALL day. I am so glad to see them out on DVD and my husband is now hooked. You just dont get comedy shows like this anymore, and thats a shame. Also Recommended: The Prisoner
