Barnes & Noble A tense thriller incorporating most of the themes and characters found in classic films noir, Second Skin will dazzle viewers with its facile manipulation of tried-and-true elements. Like many films in the genre, it begins with a flawed protagonist -- Sam Kane (Braveheart’s Angus MacFadyn) -- who changes his identity and takes up residence in a small town in an attempt to bury his questionable past. But Sam’s new life as an unassuming book dealer is thrown into chaos soon after he takes up with mysterious, seductive Crystal Ball (Natasha Henstridge), whose dangerous schemes could wind up getting them both killed. Director Darrell Roodt, obviously realizing that many viewers will think they can predict what will happen at every turn of the plot, periodically leads them down the garden path, only to detour into several seldom-explored byways. MacFadyn makes a perfect foil for femme fatale Henstridge, a silky-voiced blonde beauty who fits the noir iconography like a seamed stocking. As one of the heavies, Peter Fonda is delightfully tongue-in-cheek. Familiar enough to be comfortable entertainment, but innovative enough to keep viewers off balance, Second Skin is a worthy addition to the film noir ranks.
