During the fall of the Tokugawa regime in Japan, one swordsman led the way into the Meiji Era, leaving a trail of carnage behind him. People throughout the country feared this man and called him Battousai, or the Manslayer. However, as the Meiji imperialists rose to power, the Battousai mysteriously disappeared without a trace. Stories of the red-haired samurai with an X-shaped scar on his cheek spread, and the Battousai became a legend. Now, 15 years into the Meiji Era, a wandering samurai fitting the Manslayers description has appeared in Kyoto. Wielding a reverse-blade katana, the wanderer calls himself Kenshin; he has not only relinquished the name of Battousai but has also given up killing, embarking instead on a quest for peace and inner solitude. Finding a new home at the Kamiya School of swordsmanship, the wanderer gains the friendship of the assistant master of the school, the lovely Kaoru, as well the trust of many of the townspeople. As this reformed killer looks for a place within an increasingly Westernized Japan, he ultimately protects his new friends against the returning evils of the past and the corruption of the present the only way he knows how -- with his sword. Continuing Keshins sword saga is this fourth collection, which includes the episodes "Going for the Grand Championship," "To Save a Small Life," the two-part "Assassination Group of Five," and "Fly to Your Dreams."
