Barnes & Noble Cross the alien-infiltration and paranormal-phenomena story lines of The X-Files with the teen angst of Dawsons Creek, and youve got the essence of this engaging TV series, a novel twist on sci-fi programming that attracted a faithful fan following. The 23 episodes of Season 1 take place in the sleepy New Mexico town where a UFO supposedly crash-landed in 1947. In the pilot episode, we meet best friends Liz Parker (Shiri Appleby) and Maria De Luca (Majandra Delfino), who juggle their high school studies with work in the Crashdown Café. Critically wounded in a shooting, Liz is miraculously healed by Max Evans (Jason Behr), a fellow student and secret admirer. He, his sister Isabel (Katherine Heigl), and friend Michael Guerin (Brendan Fehr) are somehow different from the towns other teens, and the reason is soon revealed: they are the progeny of the aliens who crash-landed in Roswell, born after decades spent in hidden incubation pods ejected from the doomed craft. As the series unfolds, the alien teens come to grips with their unearthly powers while trying to fit in with their human neighbors. Protecting their secret isnt easy, especially with stubborn Sheriff Valenti (William Sadler) keeping an eye open for anything suspicious; his father had firsthand knowledge of the 1947 incident and was widely ridiculed by fellow townspeople for his belief in alien visitors. Roswell takes many twists and turns in its debut season, and each episode reflects unusual care in the writing, directing, and acting. The ensemble cast is especially good, with Appleby, Behr, and Heigl the undisputed standouts. Roswell is not your typical science fiction show -- and thats exactly why it is so beloved by a coterie of loyal fans whod be happy to welcome you into their ranks.
