Barnes & Noble Russell Crowe (Gladiator, The Insider) gives a mesmerizing early performance in Geoffrey Wrights brutal drama about a group of skinheads in Melbourne, Australia. As the gang wages an ongoing battle against Asian immigrants, the skinheads vicious leader (Crowe, in one of his first major roles) and his right hand man (Daniel Pollock) vie for the attentions of a wealthy girl (Jacqueline McKenzie) whos on the run from her sexually abusive father. Theres precious little sentimentality in Romper Stomper, just extended scenes of chilling gang violence, Nazi iconography, and diatribes on racial purity (complete with a quotation from Mein Kampf) all served up with arresting style. The fight sequences, shot with frantic camera moves and set to ear-splitting punk rock, are awash in blood and inter-cut with frenetic sex scenes. And Crowe, with his shaved head and swastika-covered body, is a charismatic monster whose explosions of overpowering rage are truly frightening. Romper Stomper is not for the squeamish, but it is a powerful, unflinching look at disaffected youth and the dark side of human nature. The Fox DVD includes audio commentary by the director, two documentaries, and interviews with the director and with Russell Crowe.
