Barnes & Noble Hercule Poirots flair for drama is nicely highlighted in Agatha Christies Poirot Set 6, an adaptation of three more Christie short stories that aired on PBSs Mystery! series, starring the inimitable David Suchet as the famous Belgian detective. The subject of the first mystery, "The Theft of the Royal Ruby," is apparent from the title; its solution dominates Poirots Christmas holiday and involves one of his most complex and brilliant gambits. "The Mystery of Hunters Lodge" finds Poirot investigating a brazen murder at a hunting lodge while bedridden with a cold. These two are among Christies most circuitous tales, and they are distinguished by their excellent denouements, with Poirot showing a masters hand for staging the moment of truth. And this Poirot penchant for theatrics is taken to new heights in perhaps the best of the three, "The Affair at the Victory Ball," where Poirots investigation of a murder at a costume ball leads to a classic drawing-room climax that he conducts as a live radio broadcast, complete with sound effects. Poirot, of course, is ever pleased with his own celebrity -- when hes told that he should attend the ball costumed as "someone famous," Poirot goes dressed as himself! -- and it’s a delight to see him revel in the drama. Although Poirot flies solo in the first mystery, one or both of his trusty sidekicks, Captain Hastings (Hugh Fraser) and Miss Lemon (Pauline Moran), are on hand for the other two. And by this stage in the series, all traces of rivalry have vanished from his relationship with Scotland Yards Inspector Japp (Philip Jackson), who by now seems to trust Poirot implicitly and cooperates to the fullest. The result is a trio of mysteries where what counts is not only whodunit, but how theyre caught. Poirot catches them here with scene-stealing style.
