Barnes & Noble HBOs intense and often harrowing series about life in a maximum-security prison moves into a new phase as Season 3 opens. Oswald State Correctional Facilitys Warden Flynn (Ernie Hudson) has his hands full trying to adjust to new staff members whose philosophies differ from his. Squabbles over procedure dont make life any easier for Tim McManus (Terry Kinney), administrator of Cell Block Five -- a.k.a. the Emerald City -- where some of the toughest cons are housed. As always, subplots involving individual prisoners dominate the eight installments comprising the third season, which is another showcase of terrific acting. In the summer leading into his debut on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Christopher Melonis Chris Keller character really stands out. Another Law & Order lead, Criminal Intents Kathryn Erbe, paints a convincing and not altogether unsympathetic portrait of convicted murderer Shirley Bellinger, scheduled for execution and confined in Oz because the womens prisons dont have a Death Row. Also memorable in their recurring roles are Tom Mardirosian, Luiz Guzman, and Chuck Zito, the former Hells Angel, bodyguard, and stuntman. Series creator Tom Fontana, overseeing a large ensemble cast and interweaving plots, deserves the lions share of credit for maintaining such a high level of quality: Each episode is crafted with as much care as youd expect to see lavished on a feature film, and several are directed by familiar in-front-of-the-camera names. Matt Dillon directs "Napoleons Boney Parts," for instance, and Chazz Palminteri is behind the camera for "Unnatural Disasters," an experience he recounts together with Fontana in a full-length commentary that accompanies the episode on this DVD.
