The National Hockey Leagues recent history has been eventful, to say the least, and NHL All-Access allows fans a rinkside seat to the leagues most compelling twists and turns. The footage includes moving images from the day Wayne Gretzky called it a day, retiring after one of the most amazing careers in professional sports. Watch Patrick Roy break a 30-year record to become the all-time winningest goalie in NHL history. Marvel at Mario Lemieux as he comes down from the owners box to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins after a three-and-a-half year retirement. The main draw here, of course, is the behind-the-scenes footage: NHL cameras go into the locker rooms, behind the benches, and even on the ice to confer with the coaches and players as well as on- and off-ice officials. Noteworthy observations come from Washington Capitals coach Ron Wilson, Atlanta Thrashers veteran forward Ray Ferraro, and referees Paul Stewart and Kerry Fraiser. They underscore the power, intensity, and emotion of the game, and also show the humor that fans rarely get to see on the ice. The NHL All-Access DVD affords more than 30 minutes more footage than the VHS version, including the dramatic ceremonies marking the closing of the Montreal Forum, a day-in-the-life segment with the Calgary Flames Valeri Bure, a trip to Sweden with the Vancouver Canucks, and the moving short film "Pond of Dreams," which features Gretzky, Lemieux, Gordie Howe, and Jaromir Jagr, among other past and present NHL stars.
