In 1995, L.A. Law and NYPD Blue creator Steven Bochco brought us this groundbreaking legal drama, focusing on a single case. It’s a doozy, too, melding elements of the Heidi Fleiss and O. J. Simpson cases, among others, into the murder of 15-year-old Jessica Costello, found naked and tied to a bed in her apartment. Defense-attorney-to-the-stars Teddy Hoffman (Daniel Benzali) is brought in when early evidence points to slimy multimillionaire Richard Cross (Stanley Tucci), who, it quickly becomes clear, isnt telling anyone the truth. A second possible suspect is another of Teddys clients -- Hollywood bad-boy Neil Avedon (Jason Gedrick), who has a bad temper and history of substance abuse. Other players were Dylan Baker as the lead LAPD detective; Bobbie Philips as the victims older sister, who is having an affair with Cross; Bochcos real-life wife, Barbara Bosson, as the lead prosecutor; Mary McCormack as one of Teddys assistants; Stanley Kamel as an exceedingly creepy psychiatrist; and Patricia Clarkson as Teddys dutiful wife. Then-unknowns Jenna Elfman and Brittany Murphy also have guest appearances during the first season. With each episode, Murder One becomes more labyrinthine, and missing an episode meant risking becoming hopelessly lost. The plot twists took a backseat to the ensemble acting, with bravura performances from Benzali and Tucci -- whose Cross ranks among the most memorable TV villains of the 90s. Murder One proved to be too much of a commitment for most viewers in the end, and the shows single-case format was reworked for the series second, final season. Benzali also bowed out, replaced by current Cold Case star Anthony LaPaglia. This DVD set is the perfect way to watch Murder One -- you can rewind, pause, pore over the evidence, and watch one episode after another without having to wait a week to find out what happens next.
