Barnes & Noble During its brief, late-90s run on HBO, Mr. Show was easily the funniest thing on television and the closest America ever came to replicating the brilliance of Monty Pythons Flying Circus. It was so good almost no one watched it; airing on Fridays at midnight didnt help. Yet the series reputation has grown to mythic status since its cancellation. Initially, creators Bob Odenkirk and David Cross wrote every episode and played nearly every part in this schizophrenic sketch show, but by this fourth and final season, Mr. Show had evolved a troupe of talented writers and performers that broadened the appeal of the show without diminishing the funny quotient. Highlights from the season include an "E! True Hollywood Story" parody about a Corey Feldman-like actor who blames his careers demise on the fact that he was never told that money had to be exchanged for products and services; an underground "party tape" video featuring a heavy metal band in denial about their sexual preferences; a family pizza chain where the staff dress like Marilyn Manson; and God recording an audiobook version of his autobiography (the Big Guy looks and sounds suspiciously like onetime Paramount studio chief Robert Evans). Theres so much going on in each densely packed episode, you may have to watch them three times before you catch all the jokes. And with this DVD set, youll probably want to do just that. What set apart Mr.Show from other sketch comedy during the late nineties wasnt the vulgarity of the humor it was how everything came together in the end. Every Sketch was connected in some way and the progressing segment was more absurd than the last and it worked! This DVD set also includes bloopers from the previous seasons and a skit from the 1998 Comic relief and of course the best part of the Mr.Show DVD: the commentaries. Buy it!
