Barnes & Noble The whodunit is an exacting dramatic form, requiring unusually intricate scripts to fool puzzle-solving viewers as well as colorful characterizations to keep people coming back for more. Monk succeeds on both counts, baffling audiences while keeping them interested in the leading characters. Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub), a highly neurotic ex-cop turned private investigator, is an obsessive-compulsive with multiple phobias. Hes also haunted by the murder of his wife, one of the few mysteries hes been unable to solve. Monks former chief, Captain Leland Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine), is exasperated by the mans eccentricities but has great respect for his ability, which means that the newly minted P.I. is frequently called in on cases the police are unable to handle themselves. Since Monk can barely function outside his own private environment, assistant Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram) accompanies him everywhere. Season 1s 13 episodes -- including the two-hour pilot -- are uniformly excellent, sporting complex plots, sharp dialogue, and numerous opportunities for Shalhoub to demonstrate his formidable comedic skills. First-season guest stars include Adam Arkin, Willie Nelson, and -- playing himself -- Tim Daly, with whom Shalhoub worked for years on the sitcom Wings. A novelty in that it succeeds as both comedy and mystery, Monk begs for discovery by viewers who may have missed it on USA Network, and its release on DVD is most welcome. I only started watching Monk in the second season, so this collection was a real treat for me. Its something youll watch over and over again. Tony Shalhoub and the cast are superb! I just cant get enough of Monk!!Heather, a huge Monk fan, August 1, 2004 Great show!I fell in love with this show at the beginning of season 2. Its clever and I can relate to Monk in many ways. The only problem I had with the DVD was the sound on the Special Features. The background music is louder than the dialogue. Other than that, the episodes were amazing!A reviewer, A reviewer, July 26, 2004 REVIEWIf you are just getting into the show Monk, this is a great source to go to. I started watching during the second season and therefore missed a lot of the backstory and history. I bought the season premiere and after watching it, hoped that USA would put it out on DVD. Its now here for all the fans to watch and re-watch over again. The cast do a great job in performance and the storylines are funny. It is truly a detective show that incorporates comedy as well. It leaves you guessing as to who did it.A reviewer, A reviewer, July 15, 2004 Must See DVDYou would be crazy not to see an awesome show like Monk! If you have not seen it already you might just be out of the loop of the convo. with friends so buy it now! you wont regret it.A reviewer, A reviewer, June 18, 2004 One of the Best Shows in TelevisionThe only downside about this set is that it came out so late.
