Barnes & Noble Fred Rogers was in a class by himself, as he so ably and nurturingly demonstrates in this collection of two imaginative episodes from his touchstone children’s television series. The title episode addresses a wonderful rite of passage: going to school. In the Neighborhood of Make Believe, new students Anna, Prince Tuesday, and Daniel learn that school is “not that scary at all” and their parents back at the castle get in touch with their feelings as well, and accept that it’s okay to miss them while they’re at school. In the second episode, Mister Rogers tells viewers, “There are so many things to learn in this world.” Among them are matching the right battery to the right toy and appliance, while in the Neighborhood of Make Believe, “the latest in educational machinery” just can’t measure up to a field trip. Fred Rogers is definitely old school. He encourages children to share their feelings, promotes positive self-esteem, and celebrates the differences that make each person unique. For extra credit, this DVD contains Grade-A extra features, including one of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood’s most popular excursions, a tour of a crayon factory.
