Do we have to spell it out for you? M-I-C! See this real soon! K-E-Y! Why? Well, remember that classic Twilight Zone episode about the stressed-out executive who wills himself back to the summer of his youth, complete with cotton candy, merry-go-rounds, and band concerts? Thats the nostalgic glow youll get watching the inaugural week of the hour-long series that made after-school time special for the first television generation. Monday was "Fun with Music Day," Friday was "Talent Round-Up Day," and in the middle, Wednesday was "Anything Can Happen Day." As host Leonard Maltin points out in liner notes that accompany this two-disc set, The Mickey Mouse Club became a daily ritual and made overnight sensations of the young and talented cast, most notably Annette Funicello. Each episode contains a newsreel featuring "news of the day" for kids, performances by Jimmie Dodd and the Mousketeers, appearances by childrens entertainers such as "balloonologist" Wally Boag, and Sooty -- a puppet character from England. Of course, each day featured a "Mouse-cartoon," too. Its all very quaint, very corny, and very 50s. The first installment of a daily career-guidance segment, for instance, shows boys how they can become airline pilots and girls how they can be airline hostesses. What still shines through are the personalities of the troupe, many of whom inspired their own fan clubs. Maltin interviews several former Mouseketeers, including Bobby, Karen, Doreen, Sharon, and Cubby, who warmly recall Dodd, the true leader of the club, and their years as part of a pop-culture phenomenon. "Hey there, hi there, ho there" -- The Mickey Mouse Club is as welcome as can be on DVD. I hope that there are many more dvds to come. First the shows themselves and then the bonus material. You are going to be priviledged to see the very first week of the show. You will see the old ABC Television Network insignia from the 1950s. Youre going to see the original introductions with the Mickey Mouse Club insignia flashing on a billboard near the downtown area of a city. Not only do you see it at the beginning of the show, but at the beginning of each segment. At the end of each segment, the ABC insignia appears and an announcer tells us to stay tuned for more. The downtown area reappear with the blinking Mickey Mouse Club insignia. The blinking insignia stops and there is a very short advertisement for the sponsor of the next segment appearing on the billboard. I mean, folks, this is the real deal. Monday is Fun With Music Day, however, first we see a Mickey Mouse Club newsreel with Mickey scurrying out on stage and getting behind the camera to roll the film. After the newsreel, the mouseketeers appear dancing on th screen. There are a couple of music segments with the mouseketeers. Theres the serial, What I Want to Be followed by the Mousekartoon. Karen is the very first mouseketeer to ever give an introduction to a mousekartoon. Jimmie closes the show telling us that he hopes that we enjoyed the show. He gives a quick synopsis of whats on the rest of the week. Tuesday is Guest Star Day, Wednesday is Anything Can Happen Day, Thursday is Circus Day and Friday (my favorite) is Talent Round-Up Day. During the introduction to Talent Round-Up Day some of the mouseketeers are dancing with their wrap around ponies! During the week youll see Sooty the Puppet, another newsreel, a Jiminy Cricket educational lesson, roll call for each themed day of the week, and much, much more! The bonus material is outstanding. Theres a very loving tribute to Jimmie Dodd, recently discovered color film of the mouseketeers at Disneyland on the day that it opened. I could go on and much more! This is a set that if you dont buy it you will kick yourself for not doing so when it becomes unavailable. Yes, its politically incorrect and to that I say, SO WHAT!. My goodness, my heart beats faster the more that I talk about it! Just go out and get it! Walt Disney Company, if youre reading this, we want many more shows released! Release the entire series! WOW!!Also Recommended: Any one of The Walt Disney Treasures!
