In June 2001 Michael W. Smith recorded a live worship CD in Lakeland, Florida, that has since stunned even Smitty himself by becoming his fastest-selling release ever. Part of the reason for Worships success was that it so adeptly captured the raw emotion one finds at such events, which differ from traditional concerts in that the focus is not on the artist but rather on praising and worshipping God. The DVD Michael W. Smith: Worship builds on that energy and ratchets it up a notch. Recorded in April 2002 at a Youth for Christ conference at Edmonton, Albertas, Skyreach Centre, Worship has a more reverential feel than its namesake CD, aided no doubt by the visual of 15,000 mostly white, arm-waving teenagers, many with tears streaming down their cheeks. Those not familiar with the modern worship movement may be a little weirded out by so much spiritual fervor; Smitty himself gets choked up at several points, overcome by the image of so many young people praising God. Powerful moments abound here -- the acoustic "I Give You My Heart," the soaring "Agnus Dei," Smiths performance of U2s "40," and even his impassioned recitation of Psalm 139 all sizzle with emotion. This isnt a rock concert, however -- theres little talking between songs, and theres a concerted effort to take the focus off Smith. Those wanting a concert experience may prefer Smiths 1993 Change Your World Live, but those wanting to worship along with one of Christian musics biggest stars will be amply satisfied by the religious devotion captured on this DVD. Bonus features include a behind-the-scenes feature (largely rehearsal footage and crew interviews); a few goofy deleted scenes; a "making of the DVD" feature; and audio commentary by Smith himself.
