The ever-resourceful MacGyver (Richard Dean Anderson) flounders somewhat in this shows fourth year, which lacks the thematic cohesiveness of earlier seasons and relies more heavily on the personalities of its principal cast members. Although some of his adventures still take place in foreign climes and have international ramifications, MacGyver spends a lot of time resolving problems that arent really worthy of his special talents. Not that individual episodes of this type arent entertaining: the season opener, "The Secret of Parker House," is an old-dark-house mystery that reunites Mac with trouble-prone Penny Parker (Teri Hatcher), who has just inherited a haunted mansion formerly occupied by her aunt. "Ma Dalton" finds Mac helping old buddy Jack Dalton (Bruce McGill) track down his missing mother, whos also being pursued by a bounty hunter. We learn a bit about Macs early days in "Blood Brothers," in which MacGyver returns to his hometown and recalls a fatal shooting that involved one of his close friends. "Nightmare" is a particularly tense episode; Mac escapes from foreign agents but races against time to find an antidote for the deadly formula with which hes been injected. All in all, the 1988-89 years is an uneven one, but the undeniable chemistry between Anderson and series regulars McGill and Dana Elcar counts for a lot, and their performances smooth over some of the bumpy spots created by uneven scripting.
