An unusual concept and a quietly charismatic leading man, Richard Dean Anderson, helped make this action-adventure show a fan favorite that lasted seven seasons and became a hit all over again in syndication. Anderson played Angus MacGyver, a resourceful undercover operative assigned to important missions by a top-secret government agency disguised as a think tank. MacGyver is unique among modern heroes because of his personality traits and his approach to perilous situations: Deeply committed and principled, he eschews weapons and relies on his encyclopedic knowledge of practical science to extricate himself from difficult situations. The resourceful MacGyver can employ anything at hand; in the pilot episode, for example, he uses chocolate as a sealant. A household fan, a car battery, chewing gum -- in MacGyvers hands just about any normal, everyday item can become a valuable tool. Although he appears in the pilot in a supporting role, veteran character actor Dana Elcar later turned up as Peter Thornton, MacGyvers nominal boss. He first appears in "Nightmares," a midseason installment thats one of the better shows among the 22 collected in this box set. "Every Time She Smiles," another top-notch episode, introduces garrulous artist Penny Parker (Teri Hatcher), who became a recurring character and a terrific foil for the lead. "Trumbos World," set in Brazil, borrows not only its premise but also a sizable chunk of footage from the 1954 feature film The Naked Jungle. A change of pace from the usual cloak-and-dagger stories, this episode pits Mac and an etymologist friend against a horde of killer ants that threaten to overrun a jungle compound. "The Assassin," which finds MacGyver impersonating a hired killer, brings Season 1 to a suspenseful end. These early installments in the series display terrific ingenuity on the part of the writers, who were repeatedly challenged to come up with miraculous feats their hero could perform using ordinary items. Anderson deserves a great deal of credit for making the series protagonist a likable and believable guy, and his fans will be delighted with this nicely packaged collection. Disc 2: The Heist, Trumbos World, Last Stand, Hellfire. Disc 3: The Prodigal, Target MacGyver, Nightmares, Deathlock. Disc 4: Flames End, Countdown, The Enemy Within, Every Time She Smiles. Disc 5: To Be A Man, Ugly Duckling, Slow Death, The Escape. Disc 6: A Prisoner of Conscience, The Assassin. Also Recommended: ALL of Stargate SG-1, and anything with RDA. When is LEGEND going to be on DVD???A Nostalgic Reviewer, A reviewer, April 20, 2005 Great ShowI grew up with MacGyver, and I loved it. I was still a kid when the show went off the air, but Ive never forgotten it. I would definitely recommend it for everyone. Also Recommended: All of the following shows are great on DVD: Law and Order:Special Victims Unit, Dead Zone, Full House, Home Improvement, The Brady Bunch, and Im sure Lost will be when it comes out in September.A reviewer, A reviewer, April 18, 2005 Hang onto your pocket knives!Ah, a hero with attractive good looks, even better brains, good sense, & who probably boosted revenues for the maker of the Swiss Army Knife. (I have a "Miss Army Knife" myself: basic SAK tools plus mirror, needle & thread & safety pins)Also Recommended: seaQuest (when are you going to carry the DVDs?), Earth 2, Babylon 5.A reviewer, a martial arts instructor from CA., February 10, 2005 Patron Saint of Solutions!Wow! Hurry up with season 2! From homages of the old versions of the Italian job and Naked Jungle not to mention several other classic films, heres a hero, no, patron saint, of all who find themselves in a jam. The anti gun, helping hand, we can do anything if we all work together attitude is happy, refreshing, and hopeful. Thinking on your feet can save your life, and the pro-environmental statements are a plus. The sheer fun of trying to guess what Mac is going to make next makes you feel like you too, can be a hero. just stay in school, pay attention in science, eat healthy and get involved with your community. In these paranoid days of terrorism, a hero that can save the day with a bit o duct tape, baking soda, chocolate, or a large map, is refreshing, indeed and within all of our grasps. Also Recommended: The Pretender (soon to be released in March 05) The Italian Job I, RobotA reviewer (mcgyverrules@yahoo.com), A reviewer, January 28, 2005 Great Action ShowThis is probably my favorite show from the 80s. The first season was great but as all fans know the fourth season was the best. My favorite part of these shows was the 6th episode- I think the title was when Macgyvers Dad Died. During the episode he improvises and uses formaldahyde to keep his dads body from rotting before he can get a proper burial. Its also cool that his name his Angus cause if you take away the g its pretty funny.
