An erudite iconoclast, Jack Paar reigned briefly as the king of late-night TV. One look at this three-disc set might suggest a hell-raiser-inspired subtitle: Live fast, retire young, and leave a good-looking legacy. The first disc offers the 60-minute 2003 PBS documentary Jack Paar: Smart Television, a treasure trove of clips from the hosts vaults, featuring an incredible lineup of 60s figures. Highlights include an early Woody Allen stand-up bit, a pre-White House John F. Kennedy, Cassius Clay before he became Muhammad Ali, and a unique English-language interview with Fidel Castro, plus visits with Liza Minnelli, the Smothers Brothers, and Peter, Paul & Mary. The second disc collects interviews from Paars chat shows, presented in their entirety and including such figures as Richard Nixon, Billy Graham, Barry Goldwater, Robert Kennedy, and Liberace (paired, to hilarious effect, with Clay). The hosts short-lived variety show, The Jack Paar Program, provides the material for the third disc here, offering three complete episodes. The guest list includes such Paar favorites as Richard Burton, Bill Cosby, Bette Davis, Judy Garland, Arthur Godfrey, Gisele MacKenzie, and Robert Morley.
