Barnes & Noble Academy Award-winning director Hugh Hudson (Chariots of Fire) explores primitive landscapes and dark nights of the soul in this exquisitely rendered film. Based on Kuki Gallmanns autobiography, it is the story of a womans transcendence and salvation as she moves from the material world of her young adulthood in Italy toward a difficult but more rewarding existence in the heart of Africa. Kim Basinger is effectively understated as Gallmann, a character beset by horrendous tragedies culminating in the deaths of her husband and a son. She manages to breathe emotional truth into Galmanns central dilemma: should she accept the comfort and security of her life in Europe, with its implied spiritual death, or embrace rural Africas invigorating chaos. Vincent Perez and Eva Marie Saint, as Gallmanns husband and mother, also give strong, compelling performances. Like Out of Africa, I Dream of Africa captures, in both story and image, the complicated allure of a still-mysterious continent.
