Barnes & Noble Monty Python alumnus John Cleese, also a professor-at-large at Cornell University and a bestselling author on psychology, cowrote and hosts this brilliant exploration of the human face, produced by BBC and aired Stateside on the Learning Channel. Attempting to map the evolution of facial expressions, to determine when someone is lying, and to define "beauty" are ambitious goals -- yet this four-hour documentary not only succeeds at each task but brings it all off with the wit and insight one expects from Mr. And Now for Something Completely Different. There are serious interviews and bits of silliness to explain significant points. Along for the ride in both skits and interviews are Elizabeth Hurley, Michael Palin, Prunella Scales, Pierce Brosnan, and Candice Bergen, among dozens of experts and everyday people. Other highlights include casting director Mali Finn, who tries to pick out the next famous face, and a team of doctors who allow us to witness a little girl -- expressionless due to a birth defect -- learn to smile for the first time. Cleese also lends his face and mind to author Brian Batess companion book to the series, which will make you smile, nod knowingly, express surprise, and all those other expressive things. Chas TurnerNew York Times[John Cleese] tackles this odd subject by mixing the fearless humor of his Monty Python days with what seems to be a genuine curiosity. The result is a very informative, very entertaining, very different program that hardly seems like a documentary at all.
