Those who only know k. d. lang as a quirky cowpunk priestess may be surprised at the knee-deep soul she evinces in this program of fan favorites. But longtime fans are no strangers to the intoxicating versatility of her suave presence and immense voice. The material here runs the elegant gamut from the Bacharachesque "Summerfling" to the lissome funk of "The Consequences of Falling" -- both cuts culled from langs underrated Invincible Summer album. Of course, theres sadness, too, in such reliable lang torch burners as "Miss Chatelaine." Cloaked in loose-fitting black clothes and stepping onto the stage barefoot, lang couches her vocal virtuosity in an utterly casual, intimate delivery. Something else makes Live by Request absolutely required listening -- her spine-tingling release on the final chorus of "Crying," the ballad that she says she "inherited" from Roy Orbison. "This uncommon kind of breeze did with our hearts whatever it pleased," she sings in "Summerfling"; and often during the concert one feels similar effects from her performance. Lang once claimed to be Patsy Clines reincarnation. Once her voice gets inside you, it can transport you out of your skin. It makes you wonder if she was right about Cline, after all.
