Barnes & Noble John Travolta reverts to his Everyman persona for this immensely satisfying thriller, which succeeds because it refuses to sacrifice credibility on the altar of melodramatic excess. Travolta is compelling as a divorced father whose 11-year-old son (Matthew O’Leary) resents the marriage of his mom (Teri Polo) to an unctuous entrepreneur (Vince Vaughn). The boy, whose reputation for veracity has been severely tarnished, stoutly maintains that his new stepdad is a killer -- an outrageous assertion believed by no one except his fiercely protective father. The pain of divorce and the effort to rebuild a shattered family are depicted convincingly, and the father, mother, and son are all drawn with three-dimensional realism. By creating a believable universe for his characters to inhabit, director Harold Becker (Malice) earns the trust of his viewers, which makes it easier to pull the rug out from under them when things turn nasty. Vaughn, whose potential for creepiness was first realized in the recent remake of Alfred Hitchcocks Psycho, is terrific as the sinister stepdad, as is young O’Leary. But it is Travolta who anchors Domestic Disturbance with his skillful portrayal of a father who fears for his sons fate. The DVD offers a feature-length commentary by Becker, who also introduces several deleted scenes. Original storyboard illustrations are also included among the supplemental features.
