Barnes & Noble For children of the 80s, Degrassi Junior High was reality television. This multi-award-winning public television series portrays school life and coming-of-age with a revitalizing honesty, insight, and candor usually absent in joke-driven sitcoms. The refreshingly unglamorous cast members look and act like junior high school students -- not models auditioning for a Teen People cover. They dont speak in punch lines. More significantly, their actions have consequences that sometimes cannot be neatly tied up by episodes end. In the first episode, "Kiss Me, Steph," popular eighth grader Stephanie betrays her best friend in her bid for school president and irrevocably destroys their friendship. In "Its Late," a students pregnancy scare becomes a reality that she must deal with in subsequent episodes. While some aspects of this 1987 series are dated, the issues it tackles are not. Friendship, responsibility, maturity, child abuse, drugs, sex, sexual identity, sexism, adoption, and fear of death are addressed in a non-judgmental way that makes this Grade-A series an excellent springboard for family discussions.
