Pop star Britney Spears sings and dances her way across America in her screen debut -- a coming-of-age drama designed as a showcase for the teen idol, whose famous midriff appears early and often. Directed by Tamra Davis (Gun Crazy), Crossroads stars Spears as a high school senior from Georgia who learns about life on a road trip west with her two best childhood girlfriends (Zoë Saldana and Taryn Manning). Along the way, she finds romance with the hunky ex-con (Anson Mount) who acts as the girls’ chauffer, raising the possibility that our perky heroine might lose her much-vaunted virginity. While Crossroads aspires to moments of straight-faced drama amid typical teen-comedy hijinks, it does provide its star with ample opportunities to appear in her underwear (once while dancing and lip-syncing to Madonna, no less!). Of course, Spears also does plenty of her own singing -- in one scene she lays waste to the competition in a karaoke bar contest, and later she triumphs at a Hollywood talent show. Crossroads is a Spears vehicle all the way -- sexy in a PG-13 sort of way and as streamlined as the vintage Buick convertible the girls travel across country in. Credit the talents of Saldana, Manning, and Mount, though, for helping to obscure this machines various moving parts. They provide excellent support; and the catfights, sisterly bonding, and lustful moments that occur during the trip are convincing and effective. Add some big-sky scenery, and the result is a charming road film thats sure to please diehard Spears fans and perhaps even win her a few new ones Gregory Baird
