Barnes & Noble The teen-friendly anime series Chobits is much like its popular android character, Chii: Its terribly cute and, when you least expect it, provocative in a way that is both innocent and disarming -- and enough to make you feel ashamed. Based on the manga by the powerhouse group Clamp (Cardcaptor Sakura), its a "boy-meets-girl" story for the cyber age. Hideki is just like every other 18-year-old guy in the 22nd century: He wants to leave the country for the city, where he can get a good job, a good car, and a "persocom" (personal computer) to call his own. Short on cash, Hideki gets his persocom secondhand out of someones garbage, but boy, is she adorable. She is Chii, a doe-eyed, irresistible persocom who, Hideki discovers, is also unprogrammed and therefore mildly dysfunctional. Carrying the baggage of a mysterious past, Chii turns out to be a lot more of a handful than Hideki expects, and she gets him into quite a few embarrassing situations. Although several of these involve Hidekis boyish awkwardness -- and Chobits revels in playful innuendo -- the series is comfortably PG-13 in matters sexual. The result is a lighthearted situation comedy for teens thats enough to catch even the most jaded of anime fans off guard. This third DVD volume in the series features episodes 9-12: "Shinbo and Sumomo Talk," "Chii Buys," "Chii Encounters," and "Chii Ascertains."
