Cannibal: The Musical, a genre-bending black comedy produced before writer-director-star Trey Parker struck pay dirt with South Park, exhibits the same combination of gleeful tastelessness and pop-culture savvy that characterizes his Comedy Central hit series. Drawing on an obscure incident from American history, Parker (billed as "Juan Schwartz") plays Alferd (sic) Packer, a real-life frontiersman convicted of cannibalism in the 1870s. Hes the lone survivor of a group of gold-seeking prospectors stranded without food in the snowbound Rockies, which understandably raises eyebrows when he returns to civilization. Parker spins this grisly yarn with inexplicable verve, making it a Rodgers and Hammerstein-type musical teeming with rousing production numbers and sappy ballads. He splashes blood and viscera across the screen with disarming abandon, but its all so strange and funny that its impossible to be offended by the gore. A low-budget masterpiece of inspired lunacy, youll find that Cannibal: The Musical is quite unlike any other movie (certainly any other musical!) youve ever seen before. Ed Hulse
