If youd like to chuck it all and start life afresh as another person, take a look at the oddball thriller Beyond Suspicion before you do anything rash. In this intricately scripted story, bored insurance salesman John Nolan (Jeff Goldblum) impetuously adopts the identity of a liquor-store clerk who dies in the aftermath of a botched robbery. He subsequently learns that the man was an ex-con with a small-town pen pal (Anne Heche) and ties to unsavory characters who, believing Nolan to be the dead clerk, approach him with a dubious proposition. This cleverly plotted film is tailor-made for Goldblum, the eccentric but engaging performer once tagged "the master of psychic dislocation." His performance is calibrated to promote much-needed suspension of disbelief: Holding an admittedly boring but successful job and living with a beautiful woman (Nancy Travis), Nolan really doesnt have a compelling reason for upending his life. But Goldblum makes us believe otherwise. The plot machinations become dizzying after a while, and youll be compelled to watch as director Matt Tabaks ingenious but shaky house of cards collapses. The DVD also features commentaries by Tabak, Goldblum, and producer Daniel Stone, in addition to behind-the-scenes interviews with other cast members, an alternate ending, and cast/crew bios.
