Friends, Volume 1 Its hard to imagine, but once upon a time it wasnt so en vogue to be a single person in Manhattan, hanging out at a coffee shop with a close-knit group of chums, discussing romantic and work-related problems. But that was life before Friends, the show that taught us that ruminating about life over coffee on a big couch was worthwhile after all. Since its premiere in 1994, Friends has been among televisions most consistent sitcoms, winning Emmys and launching its stars onto film careers. Haircuts have changed, significant others have come and gone, but the shows likeable, breezy, and usually gentle humor (a rarity in these post-Seinfeld days of jarring laffs) has remained. The original cast has endured, too: David Schwimmer as the sometimes dorky Ross; Matt LeBlanc as the airhead actor Joey; Matthew Perry as the cynical, unlucky Chandler; Jennifer Aniston as the princess-y Rachel; Courtney Cox as the matron-in-training Monica; and Lisa Kudrow as the profound ditz Phoebe. The Best of Friends features ten episodes of the show on two videocassettes or DVDs. The first volume features the pilot episode, where Rachel leaves her fianceé at the altar and moves in with Monica. "The One with Two Parts (Parts 1 and 2)" sees Joey dating Phoebes twin sister, Ursula (who was a character on NBCs Mad About You), Ross contemplating fatherhood, and Monica and Rachel taking a fateful trip to the emergency room. In "The One with All the Poker," the girls lose a marathon poker session to the guys, while Rachel frets over unemployment. "The One Where Ross Finds Out" fans the fire of the burgeoning romance between Ross and Rachel, a plot that would last several seasons, and in "The One with the Prom Video," a home movie from Rachel and Monicas prom causes Rachel to fall for Ross. The second volume begins with "The One Where No Ones Ready," wherein punctual Ross gets increasingly antsy while his friends take forever to prepare for a function. "The One with the Embryos" has Phoebe becoming a surrogate mother for her brother and his wife (a plotline developed around Kudrows real-life pregnancy), and some gambling involving animals. The two-part season-ending cliffhanger, "The One with Rosss Wedding," has the gang going to London for Rosss wedding to an Englishwoman, which ends with an odd slip of the tongue. "The One with All the Thanksgivings" includes flashbacks of horrible Turkey Days from the gangs past. And finally, in "The One Where Everybody Finds Out," Chandler and Monicas nascent romance becomes public knowledge.
