The fourth installment in this shaggy-dog story finds the Newton family -- now headed by Judge Reinhold and Julia Sweeney, who replaced the original Beethoven masters, Charles Grodin and Bonnie Hunt, for Beethovens 3rd -- coping with a massive case of mistaken canine identity. In what we can only assume to be a thematically appropriate conceit, the Newtons fluffy sheepdog, Beethoven -- at least in one half of his double role here -- adopts a pastoral demeanor. The story: Beethoven continues to run rampant through the Newtons lives, trashing Dads paperwork and ruining Moms back-to-work wardrobe. The kids, now played by Joe Pichler and Michaela Gallo, send Beethoven off to obedience school, where a mix-up results in their slobbering beast getting sent home with the Sedgewicks, uptight owners of a remarkably poised show dog who happens to resemble Beethoven, if only outwardly. The Newtons, naturally, wind up with a paradigm of house-pet behavior and become nostalgic for Beethovens slobbering bluster, which is concurrently trashing the Sedgewicks posh digs. Fans can safely assume that five more sequels will arrive, perhaps interspersed between sonatas and concerti.
