 Barnes & Noble The fourth installment in this shaggy-dog story finds the Newton family -- now headed by Judge Reinhold and Julia Sweeney, who replaced the original Beethoven masters, Charles Grodin and Bonnie Hunt, for Beethovens 3rd -- coping with a massive case of mistaken canine identity. In what we can only assume to be a thematically appropriate conceit, the Newtons fluffy sheepdog, Beethoven -- at least in one half of his double role here -- adopts a pastoral demeanor. The story: Beethoven continues to run rampant through the Newtons lives, trashing Dads paperwork and ruining Moms back-to-work wardrobe. The kids, now played by Joe Pichler and Michaela Gallo, send Beethoven off to obedience school, where a mix-up results in their slobbering beast getting sent home with the Sedgewicks, uptight owners of a remarkably poised show dog who happens to resemble Beethoven, if only outwardly. The Newtons, naturally, wind up with a paradigm of house-pet behavior and become nostalgic for Beethovens slobbering bluster, which is concurrently trashing the Sedgewicks posh digs.
