First-time director Bill Eagles combines violence and black comedy in this neo-noir thriller set in Glasgow, Scotland. Rachel Weisz (The Mummy Returns) and Susan Lynch portray two young women, Dorothy and Petula, who improvise a ransom plot after Dorothy accidentally kills Petulas abusive boyfriend. The film plays like a hipster version of Thelma and Louise as these partners in crime engage in some sisterly bonding. In scenes of the pair sharing a joint and getting haircuts, one senses their growing liberation, as well as hints of more Sapphic possibilities. While the two female leads invest their roles with real charm, the male characters are considerably less fleshed out. But then, the men in Beautiful Creatures are a pretty vile lot (delightful Scottish brogues notwithstanding), and one of the films central pleasures is seeing them get whats coming to them. Ultimately, Beautiful Creatures covers territory already well plowed by Quentin Tarantino and Guy Ritchie, but it does so with just enough quirkiness to make it seem a touch strange and almost new.
