One of the occasionally deceptive paths to self-realization is traversed in Beautiful, a bittersweet comedy that provides Oscar-nominated actress Minnie Driver with her best starring vehicle to date. Driver plays a young woman named Mona, who, as a youthful ugly duckling, was fascinated with beauty contests. Now, as an attractive but self-absorbed young woman, she becomes fixated on winning the prestigious "Miss American Miss" title. To meet eligibility requirements, she lies, not only about her age, but conceals the fact she has a young daughter (played by precocious Hallie Kate Eisenberg). Joey Lauren Adams lends noteworthy support as Drivers best friend, and Kathleen Turner is great as a pageant big shot. First-time director Sally Field milks the central situation for all its worth, and even dares to make Drivers character unsympathetic prior to the climactic, family-affirming epiphany. Beautiful flirts with satire in its stinging appraisal of beauty pageants and their participants, but the film primarily celebrates unselfish love and recognizes the unbreakable bond linking mother and daughter. The DVD includes talent files and theatrical trailers.
