B. Monkey adopts the attitude of grunge while following the conventions of the romantic crime thriller. Asia Argento (daughter of the Italian cult horror director) stars as London-based thief Beatrice, known as B. Monkey in criminal circles, who decides to give up her life of crime when she falls in love with jazz-loving elementary school teacher (Jared Harris). But, as one might expect, her past complicates matters. Thats a good thing here, because her past includes the irresistible Rupert Everett, who plays Paul, Beatrices friend. His sly delivery and all-around panache nicely balance out the films more mawkish elements. The swaggering Argento, decked out in platform heels and miniskirt (when shes dressed), smokes and swears throughout most of the film, while Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Velvet Goldmine) brings adrenaline and unsettling danger to his role as another of Beatrices cohorts. Director Michael Radford (Il Postino) also wrote the script -- a familiar tale given a fresh spin by the talented young cast. John Guida
