The series revolves around the star-crossed Jean Pargeter (Dench) and Lionel Hardcastle (Palmer), lovers during the Korean War who were separated by a twist of fate and reunited 38 years later. The highlight of the fifth season is the dramatic meeting between Lionel and his ex-wife Margaret (which Jean reluctantly agrees to attend). Dench and the marvelously deadpan Palmer are at the height of their powers, flashing a chemistry that recent American sitcoms would do well to study. Amid a sea of television driven by the need for near-constant laughter, As Time Goes By has carved a niche by doing something nearly unheard of -- revealing quirky humor in a subtle, natural pace, instead of rushing from one obvious punchline to the next.
