The seventh season of this popular British sitcom relies on the same gentle humor that brightened previous groupings, with tart dialogue and racy situations occasionally enlivening the proceedings. It continues the saga of Lionel Hardcastle (Geoffrey Palmer) and Jean Pargetter (Judi Dench), whose three-month affair during the Korean War was followed by 38 years of separation. Reunited by chance as middle-aged people, they renew their relationship and duck the various curveballs life continually hurls in their direction. The seven episodes in this collection are all choice, but we especially like the season-opening "Pardon?," in which Lionel suspects Jean has problems with her eyes and she believes hes going deaf. This age-based humor is easily understandable to older viewers usually left out in the cold by todays youth-oriented American sitcoms. "The New Neighbours" arouse suspicion when they turn up in the local pub, both sporting black eyes, the day after a spirited argument. "The Old Folks Party" is hilarious from beginning to end, with Lionel and Jean marveling at the randiness of a senior citizen gathering. And "The Proposal" finds Jeans daughter, Judy (Moira Brooker), finally hearing the question popped by her longtime boyfriend, Alistair (Philip Bretherton).
