A trio of dedicated country veterinarians adjusts to post-WWII life in All Creatures Great and Small: The Specials, two feature-length episodes of the beloved BBC series based on the autobiographical books of James Herriot. Produced in 1983 and 1985, several years after the series original run, these two special episodes jump forward to 1946, where veterinarian James Herriot (Christopher Timothy) returns from the war to his home in the Yorkshire Dales, where he and his partner, Siegfried Farnon (Robert Hardy), try to pick up their veterinary practice where they left off. Things have changed, though: Herriot and his wife (Carol Drinkwater) now have a young son; Siegfrieds impish brother, Tristan (Peter Davison), is a full-fledged vet himself and has applied for a plumb government job; and their housekeeper, Mrs. Hall, has passed away. Its a period of adjustment for all, particularly Herriot, but in keeping with the shows breezy tone, their biggest problem turns out to be finding a housekeeper who can cook. In the 1985 special, its all sorted out, and the household is back in the swing of its pleasant rural routine, complete with a parade of animals and colorful Yorkshire characters. Indeed, the best thing about these specials is how little has changed: the sets and locations are the same (though interior scenes have switched from video to film), and the actors step back into their roles without missing a beat. Thankfully, postwar life in Yorkshire remains as quaint and simple as ever. The result is a delightful three-hour excursion with some decent folk in truly gorgeous countryside, and enough four-legged friends to please even the most ardent animal lover.
