Barnes & Noble At the close of All Creatures Great & Smalls third series in 1980, affable veterinarian James Herriot (Christopher Timothy) and his partner, Siegfried Farnon (Robert Hardy), responded to the opening of World War II by enlisting in the Royal Air Force. Two Christmas specials followed, with Part One airing on the BBC in 1983 and Part Two in 1985. This ten-episode fourth series based on Herriots autobiographical books took to the air in January 1988 and is set after the war. Lynda Bellingham replaces Carol Drinkwater as Helen Herriot, and John McGlyn joins the cast in the first episode ("One of Natures Little Miracles") as Scottish vet Calum Buchanan, who joins the Yorkshire Dales practice with his tame badger in tow. Other season highlights include "Barks and Bites," featuring the appointment of Siegfrieds younger brother, Tristan (Peter Davison), as fertility advisor for the Ministry of Agriculture; "The Pig Man Cometh," which finds James and Helen looking to move to a bigger house; and "The Healing Touch." The latter episode has fellow vet Granville Bennett (James Grout) offering James a share of his practice, an attractive proposition that James continues to consider in the fourth series final episode, "For Richer, for Poorer."
