Rural veterinarians continue their work while the specter of the Second World War looms large in this third series (or season) of the beloved BBC drama All Creatures Great and Small. Adapted from the autobiographical stories by real-life vet James Herriot, All Creatures stars Christopher Timothy as Herriot and Robert Hardy as his partner, Siegfried Farnon. This pair of country vets in 1930s Yorkshire, along with Siegfrieds brother Tristan (Peter Davison), contribute significantly to the fabric of life in their small community. True to the literary source, All Creatures is surprisingly detailed and graphic in its portrayal of veterinary medicine, and presents ample opportunities to watch its heroes using rectal thermometers on various domestic animals. But the real charms of the series are its portraits of the day-to-day life of Herriots unusual household -- which includes his wife, Helen (Carol Drinkwater), and their housekeeper, Mrs. Hall (Mary Hignett) -- and the endless parade of Yorkshire characters whose animals require medical attention. The underlying focus of this third series is the onset of WWII, and the gradually increasing impact it has on the quiet country life of its protagonists. Despite these dark developments, series three retains the shows delightful blend of humor and sentiment. All Creatures is a unique retreat from the modern world, an escape to a simpler time that is thoroughly addictive. Gregory BairdCustomer ReviewsWrite your own online review >
